Updated my Polka Dot Classroom Decor Pack!

Common Core Word Problems for 2nd Grade!

It's still summer and the words "Common Core" are constantly running through my head! I created a word problem pack directly aligned to the second grade common core standards. Click on the picture (above) to grab these word problems! I am so excited about this pack because it includes over 80 word problems that cover the following standards:

CCSS. Math. Content.2.OA.B.2 (Add and Subtract within 20)

CCSS. Math. Content.2.OA.A.1/2.NBT.B.5
(Add and Subtract within 100 with and without regrouping)

CCSS. Math. Content.2.OA.A.1/2.NBT.B.5
(Add and Subtract within 100—two steps)

CCSS. Math. Content.2.NBT.B.6
(Add up to four two-digit numbers)

CCSS. Math. Content.2.NBT.B.6
(Add and Subtraction within 1000)

I use word problems daily during Guided Math. This would be the “Story Problem” rotation. You can grab my Guided Math Rotation Board here

My word problems are almost always correlated with the standard being taught at the time. This allows for the students to apply their learning to a higher level activity. For example, when doing a unit on two digit addition, the word problems will also be on two digit addition.

Each student has a math journal. Students will glue these pre-cut word problems into their math journals and will either draw or glue in the word problem 4 square(picture below)

Here is an example of a completed square.

I usually have students work on word problems with a partner or in a group of 3. This gives them a chance to talk about their math and gain ideas on different ways/strategies of attacking the word problem.

I have also used these word problems as part of my small group (Meet with the Teacher rotation) during Guided Math.

These word problems can also be used in a whole group setting, as a daily math warm-up, or with parent volunteers.

Be on the look out for my other word problem packs that cover second grade math!

Happy Teaching!

Word of the Day Bundle: Complete Set

So, I've finally compiled all of my Word of the Day packs into one complete set! Rather than grabbing each pack individually, you can now get this bundled set at a discounted price! This complete set includes all four quarters..meaning your students will learn a new vocabulary word EVERY DAY! Their brains will be FILLED with new vocabulary and they will go home using big, mature words! Can't get much better than that. :)

I've mentioned this in my previous posts but I use Word of the Day for my morning work. The kids come in, pick up their morning work, and get started right away. They know what's expected every morning and they are actually super excited to find out what new word they will be learning! Grab this morning work and have your mornings be filled with ease...and no planning! :)
