Take Home Reading Freebie

Just wanted to write a quick post on how I do take home reading each week. Each one of my kiddos has a large ziploc bag where they keep their books for home reading. I put two books (on their reading level) in their bag on Monday and they have those two books for the whole week--Monday-Thursday.

On Wednesday I give them this book report form to complete and return no later than Friday. They can choose either one of their books to write a book report on. There is a fiction side and a non-fiction side to the book report form.

You could also use this for independent reading time, guided reading, or as an assessment. It's up to you!

If you are interested in this book report form, you can have it for free here.

Well I'm off to go cook dinner. Stuffed peppers with lean turkey meat and rice with Kale on the side!!

Breaking Blog Rule! Oops! FREEBIE Inside!

Sorry I know that I'm breaking the blog rule of only one post a day but I wanted to share with you my Journey's Work onWriting Journal Prompts. I blogged about this a couple of weeks ago and posted journal prompts from Unit 1 of Journeys. You can read that here.

I've added a couple more common core aligned journal questions to Unit 1. You can grab those for free here.

I've also added journal prompt/questions for Lesson 1 of Unit 6 for Journeys.

Grab these here.

If you don't use the Journey's reading program, you can probably still use a couple of these journal prompts!

More Common Core Activities for Place Value

Hi y'all!

Happy Sunday! I have another place value activity for you to add to your Place Value and Number Sense math unit! The last place value activity I posted was for Skip Counting, Odd and Even, and Reading and Writing Numbers up to 1,000. You can read about those here.

Last week my class was working on mentally adding 10 or 100 to any given number, as well as, mentally subtracting 10 or 100 to any given number. We used my Matching Activities to do this! I had the kids complete this activity during the Independent Work station during Guided Math.

Here are some pictures of the activities that we used last week!

Next week we will be using the Greater than and Less than matching activities from this pack to learn that concept.

Here are a few pictures of these activities!

If you are interested in this pack, click on the picture to purchase or....comment on this blog post and I'll choose 3 fabulous followers of my blog, TPT store, and facebook page to have this for FREEEEEEE! Who doesn't love free???? :)

Journeys: Work on Writing FREEBIE

My school has adapted the reading program Journeys this year. It's such a comprehensive reading program that is aligned with the Common Core, so it's fantastic! I wanted to share briefly with you how I integrate part of the Daily 5 with Journeys.  One of the Daily 5 rotations is Work on Writing. Since the Common Core is heavy on writing about reading, I've developed some journal prompts that go along with the book we are reading in Journeys. Below are the journal prompts/questions for Unit 1 Lesson 3, Dogs. The kids did a great job with these, with modeling of course!

If you use Journeys, you can grab these for free here!  I'll be creating these for every one of the whole group stories in Journeys.

Happy Sunday!

Common Core Reading Response Pages

Hope you are having a fabulous weekend!

I just finished my Common Core Reading Response Pages pack for 2nd grade! I am super excited about using these next week during my guided reading groups! They can also be used for students to fill out during independent reading time or work on writing time--since the common core is BIG on writing about reading.

Here are just a couple of the pages from the pack!

I have decided that during my Work on Writing station for Daily 5, I'm going to have my students "Write about Reading" instead.  They will respond to the selection we read together from our mini lesson in their reading journals. I will provide them with a reading journal prompt--aligned to the common core of course, and they will respond to that independently. If they finish early and there is still time left in that rotation, they may participate in the "real" Work on Writing (writing about anything they want).

I will be working on these reading journal prompts tonight or tomorrow!

Interested in this pack? Comment on this blog post and I'll choose 3 wonderful teachers tomorrow night to have this FOR FREE!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Common Core Matching Activities

I'm so excited about my place value/number sense matching activities pack! I literally just finished this baby and uploaded her to TPT! I will be printing these out early Monday morning and sharing them with my precious 2nd graders! I know they will love them because they love cutting, matching, and glueing!

Since I do Guided Math Rotations in my classroom, this will be my Independent Work Station. Once modeled for the kids, this is definitely something they can do independently.

These pack covers the following Common Core standards:

*   CCSS. Math. Content.2.OA.3.3 (Odd and Even Numbers)
*   CCSS. Math. Content.2NBT.1.2 (Count within 1000; Skip count by 5s, 10s, and 100s)
*   CCSS. Math. Content.2NBT.1.3 (Read and write numbers to 1000 using base-ten numerals, and
expanded form--I've included tens and ones for review from first grade in addition to hundreds for
     2nd grade)

Here are a couple of pictures from this pack.

Daily 5 and Boggle Board FREEBIE

So...I've been stalking tons of amazing blogs as I get ready for the new school year and prepping for  the Daily 5! I've done the Daily 5 the past two years but have kind of done it my way instead of the Sisters way! This year I want to totally let go of my OCD and work on giving students that "choice" piece. I think I'm going to let the students choose their rotations this year AND will I will actually have fun activities in the word work center. In the past, I've been super, super lame and have had workbook (word families, spelling patterns, etc.) pages for the word work center. I know....SUPER LAME!

All that is about to change! I am very excited about the upcoming school year and the chance to revamp the Daily 5 in my room! And that starts with the word work center. I'm hoping to have between 6-8 manipulatives/different activities for the kids to use to make the spelling words for the week.  I will have another blog post next week about the specifics.

So, I have decided to jump on the bandwagon and have BOGGLE as part of the word work center. Now because the Boggle board doesn't allow the kids to practice the weekly spelling words, I haven't decided if I'm going to require them to do a word work activity that does involve using the weekly spelling words first AND THEN let them work on the boggle board, or if I'll just have it as part of word work and give them that choice.

How do you use the Boggle board in your classroom? I would love to hear your thoughts!

You can also grab my boggle board here. I created it to match my polka dot themed classroom decor. I'll have pictures of my boggle board next week!

Also, if you want your classroom fully decked out in polka dots, you can grab my Classroom Decor Pack here

Well it's time for me to go run some errands for the hubby while he's in class for medical school!

New Blog Design, Medical School, and BACK TO SCHOOL GIVEAWAY!

Okay I am SUPER excited about my new blog design by DreamLikeMagic! So cute!

Also, my new hubby (by new I mean we just got married in June!), has his first day of medical school today! I can't believe this day has finally come. I feel like we've been waiting years and years for this day....and it's HERE! I am one proud wife. I'm also a sad wife because he is going to be gone ALL day and I've been so used to being with him 24/7. He just left 5 minutes ago for class and I miss him already! Is there such thing as missing your handsome husband too much? If so, that's me right now!

See, we got married June 22, left for our amazing honeymoon to the Dominican Republic the 23rd (and ya'll if you haven't been to the DR, YOU NEED TO GO!), then moved all the way to South Florida (Ft. Lauderdale) July 4th. So basically, it's been 3 major things happening in our lives right after the other. Yes..super crazy, I know!

So we obviously moved to Ft. Lauderdale from VA so that my doctor-to-be hubby could go to medical school and become a doctor...a HOT doctor. At first, I was really nervous, totally freaked out, scared, anxious, about the big move to FL but after being here in the sunshine everyday, I'm definitely getting used to it! Okay, it rains occasionally...okay it rains everyday but only for like 15 minutes then it stops!

Last thing, I promise! Don't forget to enter an AMAZING giveaway at an $800.00 value! Many fabulous bloggers are blogging about this great opportunity. You can enter through a number of blogs including, Amy LemonsBabbling Abby, and Hope King. Good luck!

Happy Monday!
