6 Traits Writing

Morning! So I went on another run, although it was super difficult to get out of bed this morning. I actually couldn't finish my run....I got some sort of heat rash all down my legs (not fun!). Now all I want to do is go back to bed, but I'm too excited to share with you my 6 Traits Writing Board!

Have you used 6 Traits in your classroom?

Last year was my first year using it in my classroom, and I absolutely loved it! I't s not a writing workshop program. It's meant to be integrated into your writing workshop. Once you have your writing workshop set up, the 6 Traits will now be your mini lessons.  The six traits are Ideas, Organization, Word Choice, Conventions (grammar and punctuation), Voice, and Sentence Fluency.  I've created posters to put up in your classroom that provides statements of what each trait means. I've also created strategy cards to go with each trait. So as you teach each strategy or mini lesson, you will put that strategy card right under the poster (the trait).  It's basically like the CAFE board by the 2 sisters.

There are also a ton of resources out there on the 6 traits! But I'm really excited about this board because it will give the kids a good visual and reminder about what they have learned and what they need to keep including in their writing. Most times we teach mini lessons, but do the kids REALLY remember them? With the 6 traits writing board, they are constantly reminded of the tips and tricks that they need to work on in their writing because its on a wall in your classroom! Click HERE to get the 6 Traits board! If there are any other strategies (mini lessons) that you would like me to include, that aren't already there, let me know and I would be more than happy to add those!

Have you used the 6 Traits program in your classroom? What resources did you use?

Money Centers Pack and FREEBIE!

After sitting in Barnes and Noble for 3 hours and taking over the wedding section, I finally decided on not one Wedding Organizer but TWO! I couldn't decide between the Southern Living Wedding Planner and another Wedding Planner & Organizer.....SO I GOT BOTH! :)  I can't wait to start planning...EEEEEEK!
Well, I wanted to share with you my Money Centers Activity Pack that I created! This pack is literally FILLED with tons of money games, printables, and activities (both independent and partner activities). The entire pack is 194 pages and has a total of 16 items!  I designed this Money Centers Pack to be used in a 2nd grade classroom, but the reason I love this pack is because it could also be used with your higher first graders and your third graders in the beginning of the year. I taught 3rd grade this past year, and a lot of my 3rd grade students STILL needed practice with counting money.

Here are some of the items in this pack! Grab this Money Centers Pack HERE!

Running, Wedding, and Touch Math Money

Morning! Wow! I just went on a 3 mile run...that's good for me! I'm trying to get into this whole running thing (cardio is not my thing). I want to be able to run a half marathon sometime in the near future. I'm so glad I had my running buddy, Samantha, to keep me motivated on the run! I will actually be meeting her in a few minutes at Barnes and Nobles to look at Wedding Magazines and to see if they have the Big Wedding Binder/Organizer! I am SO EXCITED! Let the wedding planning begin....

Before I go, I wanted to share with you My Touch Math Money Student Booklet that I made. Have you tried Touch Math Money in your classroom? I used it with my lower third graders this past year, and boy did it work! It was so exciting to see them understand and be confident about counting money! So trust me, it works!

Here are some pictures of my book and how touch math money works! Click here to grab this book!

Here is the page for the penny. Notice there is a line under the penny, which represents "1". When students see a penny, they put a line under to know that they will count that as "1".

Here is the page for the nickel. Notice on the nickel there is one dot. Each dot stands for "5". So whenever students see a nickel, they put a dot right in the center to represent "5". So if they have a collection of 5 nickels, students would put a dot on each nickel, then as they "touched" each nickel where the dot is, they would count by fives! Easy Peasy!

Here is the page for the dime. Similar to the nickel, except the dime has 2 dots (one on top, one on the bottom), so the students would touch the dime twice and still count by 5s, since each dot is worth 5.

And lastly, here is the page for the quarter. You have probably caught on to the pattern! :) The quarter has 5 dots, which equals out to "25". So when the students see a quarter, they draw 5 dots (as shown in the book) and as they touch each dot, they count by fives.

This book also includes some practice pages!  Click here to grab this book from my TPT store! It's on sale now!

Well, that's all for now! Off to Barnes and Noble to buy wedding magazines! Have a blessed day!

Project List: Telling Time Activities

Here is Centers Activities Pack that I created for Telling Time! This pack is great because it can be used across grade levels (1st, 2nd, 3rd) or within one classroom (differentiation). It allows the students to practice telling time the hour, half hour quarter hour, and five minutes through board games, crossword puzzles, matching activities, and more!  All of the items in this TIME pack is also sold separately at my TPT store! :)  Click here to grab this Time Unit!

Summer Project List: Word of the Day

How many of you have created long lists of summer projects for the upcoming school year? I know I have! Every year, I always make SUPER LONG lists of things I want to get done for the next school year...but does that list ever get completed? Hmmm, I know mine doesn't. :)  As teachers, I know we ALWAYS have long lists of things to do... It's just never ending! Hey! That's the life of a teacher!

Well, here is ONE thing I've created that was on my summer project list! You can grab this from my TPT store.

This is a Word of the Day activity pack that I created to help my students increase their vocabulary knowledge. We know that children become better readers when they understand what words mean! This will be my morning work, but could also be used in small group or whole group vocabulary lessons.

The students will read the vocabulary word/definition, then will write that word three times in their BEST handwriting (I'm a stickler for neat handwriting), create an illustration that describes the word, read the given sentence then fill in the blank with the vocab. word. Then students will form their own sentence using the vocabulary word.

The students learn one word each day, then take a quiz on all four words on Friday! This pack will last you through the first quarter (nine weeks). Look for Quarter 2! It's coming soon!  Click here to grab this Word of the Day activity!
